Beauty & Love: Our Uniqueness Celebrated

Lately, I've been spending time thinking about self-growth and self-love. Different ideas and movements come in and out of vogue, but taking time for self-reflection and appreciation never goes out of style in my book.

Inspired by a common symbol of beauty and love, I wanted to honor the lips and kisses of men and women of all shapes and sizes in a dedicated piece.

Although kisses often symbolize a sensual or Eros love, I wanted to create something that encompassed more forms of love that also celebrated with kisses.

Ancient Greek philosophy identifies eight distinct types of love, each describing a unique emotional connection:

  • Eros (romantic/sexual passion)

  • Philia (deep friendship)

  • Storge (familial love)

  • Agape (selfless/universal love)

  • Ludus (playful love)

  • Pragma (mature/committed love)

  • Philautia (healthy self-love)

  • Mania (obsessive love)

Did you know there were so many different forms of love? It can bring a whole new experience to saying, I love you

The Galentine's Day event at Chic Boutique and Hair Salon created just the opportunity to amplify the love of one-of-a-kind souls in this painting. I invited anyone willing to share their kiss to leave their unique mark with me to paint on the canvas.

I think it’s important to recognize our uniquely individual selves just as they are - beauty isn’t a size or a lipstick - it’s the truest expression of your inner self.

This was also a unique challenge for me, experimenting live and exploring a subject within a subject. My idea was to create a kiss to share with anyone who needed one, collectively created by the love and kisses of many.

Over 60 unique and beautifully different people left their kisses with me to celebrate in my painting and I couldn't be more thankful. I was amazed at how varied and yet how fitting every single kiss was - the unique lines, shapes, angles and colors. And all the special individuals; their stories, voices and life experiences behind them.

Although it is not yet finished, it is coming along very nicely. I can't wait to showcase it back to all those who contributed to it.

What ways do you share your love with yourself or those around you? Is there a type of love you want to grow more in yourself or your life this year?

As always, chat with me down below, in email or on Instagram. You are loved!
